Roll that beautiful D20

This weekend I’m about to do something for the first time ever.

I’m going to play Dungeons and Dragons.

Yes. I realize I’m about to experience a level in nerd/geekdom that even some folks won’t approach.

Growing up, we were told in church about how dangerous and satanic playing games like this and Magic:The Gathering were. Doing this would lead to Satan taking our souls and lead us towards a dark path. There’s even an Adventures in Odyssey episode that talks about the dangers about what can happen when you play the game. Which is really interesting since the group I’m playing with, all the guys are strong Christians that I met through church.

Since my interests in the geek world have expanded over the past few years, D&D is something that I’ve been curious about but never got around to actually doing. I had sort of observed a campaign but since I wasn’t really playing it was confusing. I was shown all these rules books but that was confusing. I was explained how it was played but I fell asleep during the explanation because it was confusing. Needless to say, I found all of it confusing. So I was pleasantly pleased and surprised to be included in with some friends to try out the 5th edition starter set. I was told that it wasn’t going to be hard and as long as I participate, it’ll be a lot of fun. Plus I was also bribed with bacon.

In preparation, I’ve been studying up on my character sheet and trying to figure out what my character’s name is going to be.

My character is an archer.

No. Not that kind of Archer. More like this kind of archer:

I’ve been told if I name my character after Katniss or Hawkeye, bad things will happen to me during the game. Fine fine, I can handle that. I’ve been researching names trying to find a good one. We’ll see how good it is on Saturday.

I’ve also been reading the rules. So reading the rules is like reading a freaking book in itself. It is long and complicated. And I’m still slightly confused but from what I can tell, there’s just a lot of rolling the dice to see what happens. I hope I just don’t die right from the very beginning. Unlikely but possible.

While I’m really excited about playing for the first time, part of my fear stems that I’m the only newbie in the group. The other guys have all played at least one campaign before so they know what to expect. I’ve know all of them for a while, played tabletop games with them, and consider some of them to be my best friends. But I’ve never done something like this with them before and I know how some of them can take their role playing very seriously. Therefore I’m slightly nervous that as a newbie I will slow everyone down with all my questions and potentially annoy someone unintentionally.

Being the only girl who is playing isn’t that big of an issue to me. I know that there is a stereotype about girls playing to begin with plus this isn’t really something that most of my other girlfriends would be in interested in.

Again this is something that has always interested me and I just never thought I’d get around to playing it. This is a new adventure for me and I’m looking forward to trying it out. I have a big imagination so I think this will be a lot of fun and something that I’ll be able to cross off my bucket list.

At the very least, maybe it’ll turn out like this.

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You

Summer is halfway over. The year is halfway over. And thus the number of movies coming out in theaters is not that many.

I’ve gone to the theater a lot less this year than previous years (for a number of reasons) but there are still a few movies that I’m planning on going to the theaters to see. Even if it means going by myself for these are such that they MUST be experienced at least the first time in the theater vs at home on my laptop.

So just in case you were wondering “What movies Deborah is looking forward to seeing in theaters the rest of the year?”

Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1)

I know nothing about this comic but it’s ok because no one else does! But that doesn’t really matter because the trailer just looks like so much FUN. Also I’m going to see every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyways. And when did Chris Pratt get so hot?

Interstellar (November 1)

It’s a Christopher Nolan movie. It’s sci fi. It has scenes filmed IN IMAX. Of course I’m going to see this.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1( November 21)

I’m not too pleased with the fact that they are splitting up this book (it wasn’t THAT long) but I’m not missing this especially since it’s Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s last movie.

Exodus: Gods and Kings (December 12)

I missed Noah in theaters but Bible movies are making a comeback! And it’s Ridley Scott and Christian Bale! Though who knew that Moses visited stores like “The Art of Shaving” back in those days with that neatly trimmed facial hair.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (December 17)

No poster or trailer out yet.

I actually don’t remember what happened in the last third of the book but it’s ok because anything I read is going to be a lot less interesting that what’s actually going to be in the movie. But still excited!

And that’s 2014. I realize these are all slanted in the action/adventure, bookish, fantasyish, geekish genres but then again those are my favorite genres. There’s a huge gap between Guardians and Interstellar because no movies during those three months look interesting to me at all. Any of these you’re also excited for?

Celeb Fangirling: The Joseph Gordon-Levitt edition

Growing up as a girl in the 90s, I had my fair share of celebrity crushes.

JTT, Jonathan Brandis, the guy who was Spot Conlon from Newsies, Mike Vitar from The Sandlot. Just to name a few.

Many of those guys have disappeared from public life, died, or are still cute if not in the Hollywood business gracing teen magazines anymore.

And then there are some guys who started off cute and then aged very very well. Like Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I mean you remember Angels in the Outfield:

Bonus Matthew McConaughey in there as well.

Then he was on 3rd Rock from the Sun with his long flowing hair.

He was in one of my favorite teen movies of all time, 10 Things I Hate About You (aka the teen movie that starred The Joker and Robin).  Afterwards, he kind of disappeared for a while. Which is usually what happens when child actors start growing up. Do they want to change their public image? What happens if the fame they found as a cute kid doesn’t translate over into more adult roles? Sometimes it fails horribly.

And then there’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt who decided to go the indie route with movies that I never saw and to be honest for a while forgot that he existed. But it worked in his favor because he was able to move towards serious acting and building credibility vs just riding on his previous fame.

Reemerging with one of my favorite movies of all time (500) Days of Summer. I will admit, I sided with the Tom character because of who played him.

In 2012, he starred in four movies and I saw every single one of them in theaters: The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush, Looper, and Lincoln. They were all excellent movies (well, Premium Rush was ok, but JGL on a bike? Yes.) It was a very good year.

He’s done tons of other stuff including directing and starting up a production company HitRecord. He also does fantastic lip synching.

JGL is one of those celebrities that everyone can enjoy. He seems like someone who you could hang out with and grab a few beers. He’s got that boy next door appeal but with way more style.

What Good Books Have You Read Lately? Vol 2

It’s the 4th of July today and most people who read this blog probably won’t today due to cookouts, beach trips, fireworks, other things instead of being on the computer all day. But for those of you who DO happen to be reading this, it’s time for another edition of what books I’ve been reading lately.

Quick reading update: the year is halfway over and I’ve read 93 out of my goal of 225 books for the year. According to Goodreads I am 20 books behind schedule.

Catch a Falling Star by Kim Culbertson (Point, 2014)

My blurb: Food! Movie making! Young adult fiction! This book has it all. This is a great summer read. One to bring at the beach from some light (but not fluff) reading.

A Beauty So Rare by Tamera Alexander (Bethany House, 2014)

My blurb: This book was a chunkster, 480 pages in the regular version, and I had borrowed the large print from the library which was a whopping 750 pages. But worth every one of them. I realized later that I hadn’t read the first book in the series but it was ok as this one stood alone. I really enjoyed how the main character is 29 (old for the time period) and single and has accepted the fact that she is not what is normally desired. Because of that her focus is not on romance, even though it does eventually happen. There’s also a good deal of food in this book as well.

Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan (Bethany House, 2014)

My blurb: Janette Oke has always been comfort reading for me and I was thrilled that they’re returning to one of my favorite series with this book. Apparently there’s a TV show based on this, though I won’t be watching. What I did like was back to the basics and returning to the roots of the series, set in the Canadian west. The characters were very believable and likable and the ending wasn’t what I expected. I’m also a sucker for pioneer west books.

Goodnight June by Sarah Jio (Plume, 2014)

My blurb: I’ve yet to meet a Sarah Jio book I didn’t like. This one features her signature style and adds in one of my favorite things ever: a book about the love of books. If you like Goodnight Moon, this story gives a “what if” story about the author.

Three Souls by Janie Chang (William Morrow, 2014)

My blurb: I think this is probably the best book I’ve read this year so far. If you liked The Joy Luck Club or any of Lisa See’s books then you’ll enjoy this one. It’s set in China but it’s a different type of Chinese story set in the 1920s-30s. The main character is educated which is different from most stories set during the time period. She’s also dead from the beginning. I’m not doing justice here describing it. Basically if you’re looking for a unique read about POC characters, this one is a winner.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (Dutton, 2012)

My blurb: Yes, yes. I watched the movie before reading the book. And because of that, since I knew what happened I didn’t cry while reading like most people did. However, I really enjoyed seeing Hazel and Augustus’s story fleshed out and see what was different from what was in the movie. Also, this was my first John Green book ever. Yes, yes. I’m late to the game. Also I read this as an ebook on my computer because I didn’t want to wait forever for a hard copy version from the library.

World Cup Fever

Unless you’ve managed to somehow avoid all the internet and human contact over the past couple weeks other than this blog (I’d be highly flattered but also super confused) or you JUST DON’T CARE, the World Cup is happening!

For me, the World Cup is only second to the Olympics in terms of giddiness over watching sports for me.

I never got the chance to play soccer growing up because my parents only let us play one sport (and I’m such a stellar basketball player!) and I also wore glasses growing up.

The first World Cup I watched was in 1994 which was held in the US. That was an exciting time. Alexi Lalas, Marcelo Balboa. Cobi Jones. Tab Ramos. Tony Meola. That was the year that we somehow managed to get into the second round after Columbia scored their own goal in our game (and the poor dude got killed afterwards) and then during the second round Tab Ramos got elbowed in the head by the Brazilian player. Even though we lost that game, that entire World Cup got me really interested in the game.

Then women’s soccer got really popular as well and I so desperately wished that I could have played. In my high school. the cool kids played soccer.

As I got older, I realized that soccer is not a popular sport in this country. I’m not going to go into that because everyone has their reasons of why they don’t like it. What I do think is annoying is the fact that people can’t seem to just accept that it’s ok to like different things. If people enjoy one sport, let them and stop trying to talk about why it’s a stupid sport. I’m not here to convince you of why you should like it. I’m just excited to talk about something I like (and well it’s my blog).

Something that I also really like about soccer is how diverse the audience is. It’s an international sport so all different nationalities get involved in cheering. You really can’t say that for a lot of other sports.

Here’s the thing. I know we’re not going to win the World Cup unless a miracle happens. It’s going to be a while before we get REALLY good, if that ever happens. However at the same time, it’s been obvious. Our team is getting better! And there’s more interest!

This video is from the last World Cup but it still makes me smile whenever I watch it.

I went to a sports bar in downtown Reston yesterday to watch the US/Germany game and it was PACKED. Standing room only. They wouldn’t let people in due to being overcrowded. I was apparently one of the last people they let in and even then I was allowed past the steps in the entrance. Which was perfectly fine for me as I was next to the ledge and could rest my arms for the entire game and had perfect vision of TVs. But folks who left for smoke breaks during halftime weren’t even allowed to come back in. That’s how full it was.

It was the first time I’ve watched a World Cup game in a public setting so the excitement was so much greater. Also the stress level increased by 1000. I really wish we had scored a goal because I would have loved to have been able to cheer with so many folks. Those two last-minute attempts did get the heart racing with the cheers and then the groans. It was a really fun time. And I was even by myself and still had a great time.

Much like the Olympics, people get excited every four years for this event. All the other events in the Olympics take place every year but it’s not given a lot of coverage except for during that time period. And that’s when folks get excited. For me, watching the World Cup is exciting because I get to cheer for my country, watch a bunch of hot guys run around a field (hey, I can enjoy that), and enjoy a sport that I really like.

One of the goals on my next bucket list is to watch the US team win a game in another public setting. (Aiming low because I really don’t feel like I’ll ever be able to make it to a real life game.) Maybe I can cross off that goal next week?

Musketeering and Odysseying

Two fun things to talk about this week!

My next show that I’ll be blogging about for Entertainment Weekly starts next this Sunday. I’m really excited that I’ll be covering The Musketeers on BBC America. The show is not just another adaptation of the classic novel but instead takes the characters and puts them into new situations. Basically I’m really geeked because I love anything the BBC does, it’s a costume drama, there will be sword fighting, AND it stars Peter Capaldi, the new twelfth Doctor.

Since the show airs on Sunday nights, my recaps will be either be posted late Sunday night or early Monday morning. My first post however is up. To get in the mood for the show, I take a look back at previous adaptations of the Musketeers and includes bonus GIFs of Man in the Iron Mask Leo. Click here to read my post!

If you want to join in on the fun, the show premieres this Sunday on BBC America at 9/8C. I’m hoping that this show is more mainstream and has a bigger audience than Metal Hurlant Chronicles. While that eventually became an interesting show, it was very niche-y and I was having trouble finding people to talk about it with, even online. This one I think I won’t have that much trouble and I’m already excited that the official Twitter accounts for BBC America and The Musketeers have already retweeted me. The show runs for ten weeks and I believe it’ll lead up to the premiere of the next season of Doctor Who. The show has already been aired in the UK and has been renewed for a second season though Peter Capaldi won’t be returning because he seems to have another show he’s already committed too. Silly him.

Also in other fun news, I’m pretty geeked to be chosen as part of the promo blog team for the new Odyssey Adventure Club.

I listened to Adventures in Odyssey growing up and it has fond memories for me. It’s a radio drama produced by Focus on the Family so there is a Christian slant to it which is a focus of most of the earlier episodes. However as the years went by, the focus of the writing becomes more focused on  the storyline. There are some solid episodes that are just as good as any book I’ve read because I got so involved with the plot and characters. Also there’s a bunch of jokes that are for adults that the kids just won’t get. It’s been really cool to rediscover these and see how different it is for me to listen to it as an adult vs when I was a kid. While the target audience is still the 8-12 year old range, I find these very enjoyable for long commutes for adults as well. The production level is stellar.

The Odyssey Adventure Club is great because I have been wanting to listen to all the episodes but it was too costly for me to buy all the albums or my library didn’t have everything. With the club, you can stream all the episodes online. I have three months to try to listen to EVERYTHING. This will be a challenge because there are over 750 episodes at about 30 minutes each. I’m currently finishing up album 5. I’ll probably be blogging again about this throughout the summer.

Summer Activities

As a parent you are probably a big proponent of reading. Encourage your kids to dig into a book or two this summer with Adventures in Odyssey’s On Your Marks Summer Reading Challenge. Bonus points if YOU create a reading challenge for yourself as you read along with your kids!

Looking for something hands-on? Create Matthew in 3-D! Invite a few of your kids’ friends over for a play date, print off the activity sheet, and let them have at it for the afternoon (with the promise of cookies and lemonade once they’ve finished constructing Matthew).

Maybe your kids aren’t into reading, but they love math. If that’s the case, have them solve Eugene’s Sudoku!

The laundry needs to be done; the dishes need to be put away. But your kids are begging you to take them out to the zoo. Let them take a whack at Matthew’s Decoder in the morning, then make an agreement that if they figure out how to use the decoder, you’ll take them on an afternoon adventure. That’ll give you the morning to finish up your to-do list!

Being a girl who is a geek

I use an app called Timehop which tells me all my social media activity (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare) for up to 5 years ago. Sometimes it’s fun remembering things I forgot and reliving events, other times it’s a bit painful seeing what happened.

Thanks to the app, the other day I came across a Facebook post that I had written a year ago.

I am a girl. And I’m a geek.

I love all things about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I’m not afraid to admit that I know facts about all the James Bond movies, Indiana Jones trilogy (4th…what?), and pretty much anything about the Academy Awards. I want to learn more about all things Marvel, DC and anything comic book related. I love Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who and Lost. I’m not a Trekkie but the new Star Trek movies makes me glad I’m a nerd. I read a crap ton and I want to read and learn more. I would play more video games if they didn’t make me nauseous (sad nerd face). I’m learning how awesome the world of tabletop gaming is. Swords and bows and arrows fascinate me and cosplaying is fun. Hawkeye is my geek crush. History and science are NEVER boring.

All this to say is that I’m a girl and I’m a geek. And I’m not ashamed of who I am.

I think I wrote this at a time when I was struggling with all my interests and my identity because I kept comparing myself to other women that I knew. Most of my girlfriends don’t share a lot of my interests though their boyfriends/husbands did and I felt weird that I was the odd one out, like there was something wrong with me and I had to justify myself.

A year has passed since that and I’m glad to say that thing are different. Sure, a lot of my girlfriends still don’t share those same interests and I still have much better talks about my interests with my guy friends. But you know what? It’s perfectly ok! There are obviously things I can’t talk about with my guy friends that I go to my girlfriends for. And then when I need to talk about the awesomeness of Pacific Rim, I have people for that.

This might sound really simple to most of you who have your interests and are perfectly fine with them. But for me, it’s taken years to find out my identity. And I’m proud of what I like and who I am. And if someone doesn’t find that attractive or at the very least interesting about me, then it’s kind of obvious that they aren’t meant for me.

Oh. I am also really sports too. Just saying, if you’re not into the geek stuff. We can also talk about sports.

What is Deborah Geeking Over This Week Vol. 3

And here’s this week’s edition of what was awesome this week for me:

I went out to lunch after church and was told that white pizza was boring. This coming from a guy who had gotten two pieces of pepperoni pizza. Really?

I cannot put this book down. I also don’t want it to end. It reminds me of The Joy Luck Club a bit. Right now, it’s one of my favorite books of the year.

Thanks to coupons and rewards points, I got this eyeliner for 21 cents at Ulta this week. Woot.

This is a mead and it has a 19% ABV. DRINK IT SLOWLY. Also very sweet.

This song has been on repeat all week. Basically the lyrics are what I feel like any guy I’ve ever liked in my life is trying to say to me.

The Repeat Factor

Over the past few years I’ve read over several thousand books (I wish I was joking) and watched several hundred movies. A lot of these books and movies were new to me. Before you start talking about how much time I’ve wasted doing this, don’t. I’m sure that there are many things you’ve done in your spare time that you enjoyed that I could say was wasted time.

I talked earlier this week about trying new things and how it can be a really fun experience to get out of your comfort zone.

However there are also times when you like something a lot and you get comfort from rereading a book or rewatching a movie.

I know there are some folks who don’t like doing this. To them, once they finish something, it’s out of sight out of mind. It’s not a big deal to retain the knowledge so once it’s done, out the brain it goes. Whenever I talk about rewatching a movie multiple times in theaters, they don’t understand why I do this. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to understand to be honest. I like something a lot enough that I’m willing to pay to go do it again. I’ve explained this before: the first time I’m super excited so I’m just geeking out, the second time I’m trying to catch everything I missed the first time because I was geeking out to pay much attention, and any times after that is to just enjoy the movie.

When it comes to rereading books, usually it’s because the stories are comfort reads and bring back some form of nostalgia. I try to read the Harry Potter series and the Chronicles of Narnia series at least once a year. Every time I do so, I always seem to find new things. Sometimes it’s because I’m getting older and read it in a different light. Sometimes it’s because I’ve learned things along the way and become aware of new information that makes the reading experience different. Also it’s just because I enjoy it. It’s like revisiting an old friend and you’re catching up.

Right now I have an insanely high TBR pile. You really don’t want to know how many books I have to read. Plus I keep getting new books from the library all the time. But there are still times when I want to go back and rediscover books that I’ve read years ago. It’s especially tempting when I read/hear from other people discovering my favorite books for the first time. I want to go back and join them again. It’s easier rewatching movies than rereading books mainly because it takes a shorter amount of time to do the former. It gives the same feeling though.

Basically when it comes to repeating a book or movie, it has to be something that I highly enjoyed the first time around. While I can occasionally give something a second chance, it’s rare because I’d rather spend time on something I really enjoy or trying out something new.

Reading updates, TFIOS…..and a book giveaway!

I’ve been on a major reading kick lately. I know some of you still think that I read nonstop all the time like I used to but nope, that’s not true at all. I’ll do that thing where I read voraciously for a week and then I don’t want to read anything for two. I’m still trying to make my goal of 225 books for 2014 but I’ve only read 66 so I’m starting to think I might not make it.

I fully realize that reading is not about numbers or merely trying to get your TBR stack down. I’m reading books I actually do want to read. So right now that means a lot of Christian fiction, young adult fiction, and contemporary women’s fiction. I never feel the need anymore to defend what I read. I used to. Especially when I was book blogging because sometimes I felt like I wasn’t reading more heavy stuff like other bloggers. But I’ve since learned that it’s perfectly fine to read whatever I want to read. I’m still learning from my books and I don’t feel the need to try to impress anyone anymore. Not everyone will have my tastes and you know what? That’s perfectly ok. You can throw me all the dubious looks you want.

Speaking of young adult fiction, I saw The Fault In Our Stars last night at an advanced showing. I haven’t read the book but I sorta knew what was going to happen. I know shocking right? Normally, I never see a movie without reading the book first but I’ve actually never even read a single John Green book before either. *ducks from all the flying tomatoes*

I’m not going to spoil anything for those who haven’t read the book or still want to see the movie but I sobbed like a baby. If you’ve seen the trailer or even just the poster, I mean it’s story about teenagers in love and there’s cancer involved. I want to go back and read the book now because I thought the movie was really well done. It felt authentic and not trying to force feelings on you. Throughout the theater you kept hearing the sniffles. I do enjoy a good movie cry and this one was a good stupid cry. That is once I got over the fact that it wasn’t Tris and Caleb being incestuous with each other. Also, Shailene Woodley’s hair is incredible; when my hair was that short, it NEVER looked that good.
