I’m a Cereal Girl

I ran out of milk the other day. I know, boring story who doesn’t run out of milk? It’s weird though, because there are some days when I’ll have to throw out even a half-gallon (hey, it’s just me drinking it) because I didn’t get it all finished in time before the expiration date. THen there are days when it’s gone in less than a week. It took me a while but I finally discovered why.

Milk disappears when I have cereal in the house.

I am one of those types of people who love cereal. It’s true. Sugary cereal. Healthy cereal. Cold cereal. Hot cereal. It’s ALL good.

This is me basically:

Growing up cereal was a treat in our house. We always had at least one box to share between the three of us. However my mom was pretty choosy over what we could get. We could only get “the good stuff” if it was $2 or less. This meant that getting stuff like Froot Loops or Lucky Charms could only happen when they went on sale. This made it all the more challenging and worth it because you never knew what was going to available at the store. Also there were cool toys and things to be had in cereal boxes but really for us, the actual cereal was more exciting.

I still carry on this tradition to this day as an adult. I only get cereal when it’s on sale for $2 or less. My only exception is granola. But it really is amazing how if you just wait, you’ll be able to get all the delicious cereal at some point. And when they do go on sale, I make sure to stock up. Currently I have Lucky Charms, Golden Grahams, and Reeses’ Cereal. This is why my milk disappears.

My favorite movie theater, the Alamo Drafthouse, has a cartoon cereal party series they host often where for $5 you can watch 2 hours of cartoon on the big screen PLUS get all the sugary cereal you can eat. And milk. It’s the best deal ever. Last time I had about 5 bowls of Froot Loops, Cocoa Krispies, and Apple Jacks. It’s like your childhood dreams have come true.

Cereal is like candy. But it’s also healthy when you want it to be. I do also enjoy a bowl of (Honey Nut) Cheerios or (Frosted) Shredded Wheat. The clusters in Honey Bunch of Oats are the best. Top them off with fruit and you got yourself a balanced breakfast.

There are some cereals that I miss and wish would make a comeback. Rice Krispies Treat cereal. And Oreo Os. Also I have never been a fan of any of the Captain Crunches. Interestingly also we never bought the bag cereal. I realize it’s basically the same but something about a bag vs box makes me choose a box every time. I have also found that the generic cereal is just as good and can be cheaper but if the price is the same, I’ll choose brand name. I know, weird.

Seriously though cereal is the best. It is a quick and easy meal when you don’t feel like cooking. I realize there are folks out there that don’t like it. And it’s ok. We all can’t be awesome.

Like this restaurant. Which is the dream.

My (non) adventures in skiing

Winter has arrived and with it come ski season.

You know that time of year when people get excited to go down a mountain with two planks strapped on their feet and two poles in their hand.

I’ve gone skiing once in my life. It might probably the only time in my life.

I’m a huge fan of watching skiing during the Olympics. I enjoy watching all the downhill events as well as the freestyle skiing events. I can give or take cross-country but that’s mainly because the US isn’t really good at it so I have no real incentive to watch.

Skiing was not something we did in my family growing up. Both my parent are from countries where snow just does not exist therefore they are not big fans of it. Snow was a hindrance that needed to be shoveled away immediately and not something to play in. Therefore they saw no reason as to why we should pay money to play in snow. Plus we lived at least 4 hours away from the nearest ski resort so it really was out of the question. My youth group never went on skiing trips and I was never invited by any of my friends to go with them so I went 29 years without ever seeing skiing in person.

Honestly it never really was that big of a deal to me missing out on it. Now snowboarding I would have loved to have done because that just seems really cool and the people who snowboard are even cooler.

Then I moved up to the Northern Virginia area and the group of friends I was in had nearly everyone being a hard core skier. Like these are folks that get season passes to the resorts around here, go on ski trips almost every weekend, all own their own skis, and go out for trips out west just to ski. Most of them either grew up in snowy areas where they had to ski (or die) or their families growing up placed skiing as a priority and so they learned at a young age. Clearly I was not in their league.

But as I was trying to do a bunch of stuff before turning 30, skiing once was on the list of things to do. I was invited with a group of friends to go out to western Maryland to a ski resort. Seeing as how I was the ONLY person in the entire group who didn’t know how to ski, I decided to sign up for lessons. First I went out and bought ski pants and ski socks (because normal socks won’t cut it). The lessons were kind of a joke. I barely learned how to do anything in that hour but what do you expect when you’re not paying for personal lessons. Two of my friends (who are rather good skiers) decided to accompany me on my first (and only) trip down the mountain on whatever the easiest slopes were.

I knew I was going to be in for a rough time when I fell down while we were STANDING in line. I then fell getting off the ski lift.

We proceeded to go down the mountain where I just kept falling over and over again. My problem was that it felt like I was going super fast (which I really wasn’t) and that I was going to either a) fall off the side of the mountain or b) keep running into people. Falling isn’t fun at all. You get snow down your pants and getting up is really hard when you’re not used to wearing ski boots. I honestly was afraid I was going to break my ankle again getting up. Plus the goggles I was wearing kept fogging up plus they were fogging up my glasses inside so I could barely see.

I was about 3/4 down the mountain and had fallen down yet again when I just was tired of it all and refused to get up. The following conversation may be more dramatic than what actually happened.

D: I can’t get up. Just leave me.
C. You have to get up. You can’t stay here.
D: Just leave me, I can’t do this anymore.
C: (getting frustrated) Just get up. You’re almost there.
D: No. I’m done. I hate this. *keeps sitting*
C: YOU GET UP RIGHT NOW. YOU GET UP OR YOU WON’T EAT. GET UP NOW!
D: (tries to get up but keeps falling so C has to help her) …..ok

And we eventually got down the mountain (I fell again) and I called it a day.

There’s no photographic evidence of me skiing (thank the Lord), at least not to my knowledge. And I’m perfectly fine with that. I was very sore afterwards.

I just don’t see myself doing it again. It’s an expensive sport and from where I live, you have to travel several hours to be able to do this. Plus it’s a time sensitive activity as it can only be done a few months of the year. I honestly just cannot justify the expenses for it. Do I feel a bit left out because it literally feels like 95% of my friends ski and I don’t? Yes. But then I’ve realized that I’ve tried it and I don’t like it so there’s no point in me wasting money in making myself miserable. I’m NEVER going to catch up with my friends unless I go and pay for high quality lessons and then spend pretty much every day skiing which is never going to happen.

So I’m perfectly content with going snow tubing (THAT’S fun) and/or staying in the cabin by the fireplace drinking my hot cocoa while everyone else goes to ski. Sure I wish I could join them but I’ve accepted this lot in my life. And I’m perfectly ok with it.

The History of How I Got Into History

Whenever I tell people that I was a history major, this is the reaction I usually tend to get:

I get it. A lot of people hate learning history. To them it’s boring and full of information they don’t need to know, dates that nobody wants to memorize, and dead people who no one cares about anymore.

I chalk this up to schools not knowing how to teach history. Many schools are bound to following standards of learning and therefore are forced on what they are allowed to teach. This causes many to not like what they are teaching and therefore they just give on making history interesting to their students.

I was one of those students. I actually have always enjoyed history but it wasn’t because of what I learned in schools. I got my history learning from reading books on my own or watching historical movies and then going back to do my own research. Sadly none of the teachers throughout my public schooling every really made me consider history as something I wanted to study more even though I was very interested and good at it. Then again, I took that darn AP test and even though I read my textbook thoroughly and took copious amount of notes, I still only got a 2. So it’s no surprise that I wanted to study engineering in college because that’s where the $$$$ is.

But then I actually got to college and throughout a series of events discovered that engineering was not what I really was meant to do. I took some electives in history to fulfill prerequisite requirements and not surprisingly I loved them. I made the decision to switch my major to history. And then was when I discovered the love of history from those that do as well.

Learning history in undergraduate college was such an eye-opener to me. I took classes in Asian history, European history, and American history. I took classes focusing on British history which second to American history is the best thing ever. I learned about Chinese history from my professor who was the daughter of one of the government officials during Chairman Mao’s tenure. I took classes in American history that focuses on time periods such as the 1920s and the Cold War. For the first time ever I learned about the Chinese Exclusion Act, something that had NEVER come up in the 13 years of history I learned in public schools. I learned how and where to do proper research.

I honestly loved learning it so much that I knew that I wanted to continue my studies in graduate school. That and honestly if you want to get a decent paying job in the history field, you HAVE to get your master’s. Graduate level classes were even MORE awesome as I studied things like the American West, the Guilded Age, the History of Popular Music in the Americas, and Medical History. I also took classes in public history such as Historical Preservation, Museum Studies, and Archives. In case you were wondering my degree is a Master’s Degree in History with a Concentration in Applied History with my focus in American History.

I could go into that argument about how the humanities are still paid low and not very much appreciated. It’s kinda sad at how one can get a PhD in a humanities subject and will never make a ton of money but one has to have a graduate degree to even be considered for certain jobs. But it’s ok.

That’s the history of how I got into history. I love learning about the past because it’s like a bunch of stories and all of them actually happened. Learning about history really can help you learn not to make mistakes in the future though we tend to fail horribly at it. There’s so much more to history than just dates and facts. There’s so much to learn that I know I’ll always be discovering something new every time. Even though I don’t want to teach history, I wish I could somehow make people see that history isn’t boring.

Oh wait:

The Year of Making Lemons into Lemonade

drawn-sand-beach-new-year-43591827

This week, my posts will be taking a look back at 2014 and looking forward to 2015.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

That is pretty much how I could sum up 2014. But we’re not going to focus on the worst of times today (or any time at all this week). We’re going to look back and see the good that happened to me this year.

  • Became a contributor to Entertainment Weekly
  • Got favorited, retweeted AND replied to by Josh Groban on Twitter.
  • Also was replied to by John Cho on Twitter.
  • Saw Josh Groban twice in concert. (Sadly he did not see me)
  • Got to be bridesmaid for the first time and saw two of my best friends get married to each other.
  • Was quoted in an article for the Wall Street Journal.
  • Had to get used to being called and referring to myself “Aunt Debbie” (unofficial aunt, not actual aunt) to one of the cutest babies ever
  • Finally got to visit Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was able to cross off another item from my bucket list.
  • Went to my first MLS game.
  • Got to dog sit/house sit several times throughout the year and was able to pretend I owned a house for a while.
  • I ran my first 5k.
  • Actually played D&D for the first time and beheaded a sleeping wolf.
  • Won a crap ton of stuff during the summer. (Too many to list)
  • Saw Buzz Aldrin in person.
  • Did a Goose Island scavenger hunt in DC for my birthday. (Did not win but two of my best friends got 2nd place and a staycation!)
  • Was surprised by my girlfriends with a birthday dinner. (Seriously, was completely caught off guard)
  • Tried many fantastic beers throughout the year. (Too many to list)
  • Received a “signed photo” of Paul McDonald as a Christmas present
  • Saw Guardians of the Galaxy a total of five times in theaters. (And it was wonderful each and every time)
  • Saw God work in my life a lot. (More about that on Wednesday)
  • Got a job that I absolute love. #blessed

So all in all, I’d have to say that it was a pretty good year. (Still didn’t get to learn how to be Katniss but whatevs. Over it.) I’m hoping that 2015 will bring in a lot of new adventures (good ones) and I’m ready to face them all.

Also for fun and giggles these were the top 5 posts on this blog for 2014.

  1. When Someone is Mad at You and You Don’t Know Why
  2. Trusting God When Things Seem Impossible
  3. That Time that God Hit Me in the Head
  4. For the Love of Superman Ice Cream
  5. Celeb Fangirling: The Josh Groban edition

Actually it makes me sad at how many people have come across the first post. It seems A LOT of people have felt that same way.

My Random Grown Up Christmas List

Christmas is this week. Geez, that came super fast.

I still have NOT finished my shopping yet. This is the worst I’ve ever done. But it’ll all come through. I’m not worried.

To me personally, Christmas means celebrating the birth of Christ, spending time with family, and giving to others.  I stopped believing in Santa when I was 5 years old. We were on a field trip and the place we went to had a Santa. I asked him for a Barbie soda shoppe:

The trick was I didn’t tell anyone else that year. My parents didn’t know I wanted it and I never told a single other person. The best part was I didn’t even really wanted it. I just wanted to see if Santa really was going to bring me it. Well, as you can guess that soda shoppe did NOT appear under the Christmas tree that year and so I knew the truth. There was no such thing as Santa Claus. I became a wiser 5 year old after that.

However just for funsies (yes, I did just say that), if I did decide to write a list to Santa 26 years later these are things that would be on it. And because it’s me and because it’s a Monday, randomness.

Fingerless gloves.

Don’t ask, I just want them. And not the ones that don’t actually separate the fingers either.

A flat screen TV.

We all know how literally tiny and old my current TV is. So ANY thing bigger and flatter than that is good.

Kitchen Aid Mixer.

Yeah this is something that normally goes on a wedding registry. But dang it, I missed out the first time, can’t guarantee a second time, and gosh darn it I like to cook and bake.

Gift cards.

Surprisingly, I rarely ever get gift cards as a gift and would be thrilled to get some but no one ever seems to think of these in regards to me.

And with that this is my last post for this week. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

I’ll see y’all next week for some end of the year recaps, thoughts, lists, etc.

Questions that Need Answering

Last week I asked readers of this blog to ask me questions. People love AMAs on Reddit and Twitter so I thought ok, I haven’t talked about EVERYTHING on this blog. Surely folks would be interested in finding out new things about me that I haven’t thought of yet. Plus it’d be fun to interact with the readers. I’ve seen other folks do it on their blog with great success.

But then….*crickets*. No one asked anything. I waited patiently for the questions to roll in and *silence*. I felt like a blogging failure. Was I that boring? Was no one reading my blog? Why did I even bother? It honestly even crossed to my mind to just give up completely on writing anymore in here because obviously no one cared at all. Along with other things that had been going in my life, it just made for a very bad week.

I sucked it up however. And eventually got some questions. And I am not giving up. I enjoy blogging. I write well. And even if no one else reads this, I’m doing this for me.

So here we go!

Favorite super hero?

So most people will just awesome I’m going to say Hawkeye. And I will admit that this would seem like a logical answer given my track record. But in reality it is not. The surprising answer is actually Batman. Whaaaaaaaa?

How did you become a Christian?

This is the short answer: I was 8 years old and said the prayer in our family’s spare bedroom next to my dad’s exercise machine. But then because I wasn’t sure if I had actually done the right thing, I kept repeating it yearly until I turned 14 and actually realized that I didn’t need to repeat the prayer over again “just in case.”

You can only eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it?

Hmm. I will assume that I will remain healthy and that the only thing that would be troublesome would just be tired of the taste. Since you only mentioned eating, I also will assume then that I can drink as many things as possible. Therefore I will go with bread. Mmmmmm bread.

What are your goals for your life?

To read as many books as possible, visit London one day, and to get Josh Groban to follow me on Twitter.

How can girls and women become more involved in STEM?

I am going to assume that the question is referring to STEM as in “the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” This is a very interesting question considering I used to be an engineering major and had to quit because it got too hard for me. It wasn’t because I didn’t enjoy the subjects, it was because I was not prepared in my high school for college level courses in this field. Educators should encourage young girls who show any interest in science or math and show that these subjects can be cool as early as possible. Of course there’s nothing wrong with the liberal arts as well. But if you do have interests in science and math, keep at it because we need more women in those fields.

How has your personal faith and belief in the supernatural limited you and how has it liberated you?

Ehrm, to be honest I don’t really think about this. I don’t like thinking about ghosts and stuff like that because they are either 1) a non issue that I don’t spend time on and 2) if I think about it too much I can scare myself. I recognize that demons and stuff can happen but they aren’t really a factor in my life (and hope they won’t be after writing this) so therefore I don’t spend time on this.

How would you reach out to people who have been hurt and/or ostracized by the church, local and/or universal?

It’s always sad when someone who has a genuine faith and desire to know the Lord gets hurt by those in the church. And more often than not, it’s not by something actually in the Bible but by people instead. Christians can sometimes be the most judgmental, hateful people ever. It’s really sad because instead of loving others like we are supposed to, we turn them away from the faith instead. That being sad, all I can do is just love and listen to them and be there for them when they need me.

What’s your favorite part of working in a library?

I’m surrounded by books ALL day! People seem to think that it’s a boring job and just like any job there are some boring moments. But I enjoy interacting with different people all day and get to talk about reading and books.

Who is your favorite female author and why?

This is actually kind of hard because I read so many authors. There are some authors who have written over 150 books that I’ve read while others I’ve read just the one. I’m going to have to go with J.K. Rowling. Even though I have not read any of her adult books and am not sure that I will, the Harry Potter series is my favorite book series of all time and will be so until I die. It’s just a damn good book series and written beautifully.

Thanks to everyone who sent in questions!

Ask Me Anything. Seriously.

It’s that time of year where I like to make sure that I actually have readers out there. *crickets*

I talk a lot on this blog. A lot of times it feels like I’m talking to myself but that’s ok. That’s what blogging is about. Every now and then I’ll get some comments which are always fantastic. But usually it’s just me. Talking. To everyone and possibly no one.

But as someone once told me “interaction is so appreciated.”

So here’s your chance to ask me anything. Seriously. Anything you want to know. Anything you’ve ever wanted to ask me. Burning questions you’ve always been wanting to know or ones that just popped in your head as you read this.

I’ll even make it anonymous so that way you don’t have to tell me who you are and won’t have to worry about me finding out who you are (unless of course you ask something so specific that I’ll know it was you).

Disclaimer: I do have to right to not answer questions that I find horribly offensive. I enjoy playing Cards Against Humanity so I’m pretty laid back but I do have a line and if you cross that line, I’m not going to answer it.

I also reserve the right to answer questions with snark and sarcasm if I feel like it.

Next Monday I’ll have a post with the questions and my responses to them. If you don’t see a post that means no one submitted a question. (sad trombone) Also, in order to have a post, I need at least two questions. So that may be the other reason. You’ll never know either way. (Unless of course you actually DID submit a question and you see there was no post. Then I suppose you, question asker, will know you were the only one.)

Make them good, people. It’s your only chance. Don’t let me down.

Reading Challenge Accepted!

library

Normally if I’m going to talk about books, I’d save it for Fridays for the Geekness posts. But since today is December 1 and it falls on a Monday, there’s a reason why I’m writing about books today.

2014 is almost up. My reading goal for this year is to read 225 books. I have currently finished 200 books. I have 31 days left to read 25 more books. This shouldn’t be a problem if all goes well.

Now then, why am I talking about this on a Monday instead of a Friday? Because I have one more reading goal for 2014. To read as many of the library books I have currently checked out before I get new ones.

I was inspired by this post on BookRiot, One Man’s Diary of a Month-Long Library Closure. In it, the author’s library was closed for a month for renovations and he prepped in advance by checking out as many things as possible to get him through the month. He thought he had gotten WAY more than he would be able to finish. He ended up finishing everything a week before the month was up and in such realized how important libraries were.

That post made me want to challenge myself to do the same thing by getting a huge number of books beforehand and prepare myself for a month without checking out new books.

This is actually harder than it seems. See I work IN a library. Plus I have library cards to three other libraries. I currently don’t have anything from one library system but between the other three systems I have 44 books checked out. This also doesn’t include all the music CDs, DVDs, and audio books I have checked out as well. My problem is that I keep checking out new books before I read the old ones. And since I work in a library, this doesn’t help at all when I keep seeing things I want to read on the shelves or being returned as I work.

Therefore I made a challenge for myself. From December 1 to December 31, I will read books that are from my current library TBR pile and NOT check out any new library books. The only exceptions are if I placed the book on hold BEFORE December 1 and I am allowed to put books on hold ONLY if they are new books to be ordered and not currently in the library system.

This challenge should then fulfill two purposes: 1) I’ll meet my 225 book goal for the year and 2) I should whittle down my library TBR pile and stop stockpiling books I should be reading.

I know to a lot of you this is slightly crazy and yeah it probably is. Still, making challenges and goals for myself is how I seem to work the best.

Stop being so scared and just do it!

I love trying new things. I’m all about getting out of my comfort zone and trying out stuff.

I just hate trying new things for the first time by myself.

I’m just going to state that people who are in relationships have it so much easier. If you can convince your partner to go along with you, the battle is already half over. Then you at least have one more level before you have to resort to friends and family. If you’re single and you can’t get any of your friends/family to go with you, you’re always going to be doing things on your own.

Case in point.

When I go back to my hometown for the holidays I’m looking forward to picking up some local beers that I won’t be able to get back in the DC area. I’m also looking forward to going to a local brewery so I can try out some of their beers plus it’ll be good to catch up a friend that I haven’t seen in a long time.

However I’m dreading the whole situation. Why? Because I’m worried about going by myself and not knowing what to do. I don’t like that feeling at all. We all know how much I love spoilers. And in scenarios like this, I want to know exactly what’s going to happen so I can avoid looking and feeling awkward as much as possible. Even just the thought of trying to figure out where to park and finding the right entrance is terrifying because I’m already admitting I don’t know what I’m doing and I have to do this alone.

See, I’ve worked in customer service. And I know from personal experience how much people hate n00bs who don’t know what they’re doing when everyone else seems to have their act together. People hate it when you’re standing in line and someone doesn’t know the correct way to order something and takes up too much time trying to figure it out. Patience is not a strong virtue among a lot of folks. I don’t like doing things new by myself because I’m afraid of acting like a fool in front of regulars. Sure there are some people who like helping newbies but there are also those who hate it when someone tries to enter what’s already been established.

I honestly can get a panic attack from worrying about this too much. I know that some of you could care less what other people think.

So I envision one of these three scenarios happening when I try to go visit the brewery:

  • Scenario A: I get to the place but because I’m panicking about just trying to figure out where to park, I end up turning around and going home. I mutter to myself, It’s just not worth it, and make the drive all the way for nothing.
  • Scenario B: I get to the place. It takes me a while to figure out parking but I do it. I get inside and I’m not sure what to do and everyone else seems to figure it out. I don’t recognize anyone there and I feel very uncomfortable but I still keep going. I keep looking at menu or whatever is handy that I can read and feel like this is the worst thing ever and how much I hate being a shy extrovert and wonder why on earth I ever thought this was going to be a good idea. I finally figure out how to order my flight of beers and drink alone and check everything into Untappd so that it looks like I’m just fiddling with my phone the entire time. I either don’t see my friend at all or they ignore me completely and I feel very foolish. I wait around after I’m done in hopes that maybe someone will talk to me but no one ends up doing so. Eventually I leave feeling relieved that the whole ordeal is over but glad that I made it and vow never to do something like that again.
  • Scenario C: Everything goes fine, I’m not awkward at all, I manage to find people to talk to, I’m witty and charming, end up having a good time and wonder why on earth I was worried so much about all this?

I have no idea what’s going to end up happening. It’s a game time decision.

A friend told me to just get rid of my training wheels (other people) and do things. We’ll see what happens.

Your Hair Is Everywhere

Ever since I was little, I could always count on one compliment about my physical appearance no matter how icky the rest of me might look: people seem to love my hair.

This is not me but if you were an Asian girl growing up, I can guarantee you most likely had this haircut: The bowl cut with bangs.

People would always be coming up to our parents telling me how much they loved seeing my sisters’ and my long hair at church. We used to be told we shouldn’t cut because of how pretty it was and how they were all jealous their kids didn’t have it.

It’s really funny though because my hair annoys me. I have a very vivid memory of prepping for Columbus Day in first grade and we all made Christopher Columbus hats out of paper. After cutting them out, the plan was to paper clip them to our heads. Now, I’m pretty sure it was a combination of the texture of my hair and how it can be slippery since it gets sleek and the fact that I’m convinced my head is abnormally shaped but I was the ONLY person in my class unable to get the hat to stay on their head. And of course I got teased for it because kids just are cruel.

I know, the grass is always greener on the other side. I envy people who have curly hair or at least SOME wave to it. My hair is super thick and straight. Yes, I know some of you are super jealous of that, but let me tell you, that can be a pain. I am SUPER jealous of all you people who can put your hair up with just a PENCIL. I mean what kind of sorcery is this???

And I don’t even have the typical Asian hair. The stereotype of Asian girl hair is jet black, super straight, super sleek hair that seems to be perfect all the time. Nope, not me. Thanks to taking after my dad’s hair, mine gets really poufy if I let it air dry without doing any combing to it. Basically I feel like I have Hermione Granger hair before she discovers Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion.

Even though most people really liked my hair, I still got teased for it. I remember in middle school, my hair did this thing where a lot of it would fall to the front but it would leave a little bit in the back. And some girls decided that it made me look like I had a rat-tail and I got teased for it. To this day, I still worry about that so I’m always fiddling with my hair to make sure it doesn’t do that. And honestly, I never seem to see anyone else with this problem ever so I worry sometimes that it’s just me.

Senior year in high school I was tired of having the same hair so I chopped it ALL off.

original (2)

I mean my hair was down to my wait and was actually really heavy. It kept getting caught on the back of my chair at school and SO MUCH TANGLES. So I went super short.

short hair

Actually it was shorter than this but I don’t have any of those pics from that time period. This was during those rebellious years of my life, when I also got my eyebrow pierced. Having shorter hair was very freeing but it was also harder to maintain. Plus people kept thinking I was a boy (seriously, really?) so eventually I regrew it out again. But it was nice to have done it once in my life.

These days, I’m all about coloring my hair. No, not because I’m trying to cover up gray hair. Growing up when you have the blackest hair possible, you can’t really do anything with it. While everyone else can just use kool-aid or Jello to make their hair all sorts of colors, I’m stuck with THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT all the time. Even trying boxed hair dyes will MAYBE make your hair the tiniest bit lighter if you stand in the sun. I even tried in college using a home bleaching kit with the help of my roommate and it only made SOME of my hair turn a shade of orange. I’m super jealous of all the Asians who can color their hair very easily.

I finally decided to get my hair professionally highlighted and I really like doing it. Because that’s the ONLY way you can actually get my hair to change to a certain color.

Also fauxhawk.

Currently I am at the blondest I will ever be in my life.
